Public Utilities Minister assuring that steps are being taken to fix problems which caused a protest by Beetham Landfill workers

Public Utilities Minister Ancil Antoine is assuring that steps are being taken to fix the problems, which led to a protest, by workers of the Beetham Landfill.

The Industrial General and Sanitation Workers Union yesterday led the demonstration outside the landfill.

Police officers had to turn away garbage and dump trucks as the drivers began lining the westbound lane of the Beetham Highway

The workers gathered in front of the main gate to protest the non-payment of arrears.

President of the union, Robert Benacia said things could get worse of the workers are not paid.

The workers say the action will continue until they receive outstanding monies.

Minister Antoine says he has spoken to Finance Minister Colm Imbert about the matter as recently as Saturday.

He could not say how long it would take to get the release from the Finance Ministry.

Minister Antoine said yesterday garbage and dump trucks could go to the Forres Park or Guanapo Landfills in the interim.

More tributes for the late Patrick Manning …this time from Ashworth Jack

More tributes for the late former Prime Minister Patrick Manning, this time from the other side of the political aisle.

Political leader of the Tobago Organisation of the People Ashworth Jack is extending condolences on his behalf and that of his party to Mrs. Hazel Manning and the rest of the Manning family.

Mr. Jack noted Mr. Manning’s over four decades of service to the nation, adding that it no doubt came at great sacrifice for him and his family.

Speaking with Newscentre 5 the T.O.P. leader said he would remember the former Prime Minister for statements he made; among them his win alone, lose alone and we will beat them in the east comments.

Nevertheless Mr. Jack believes now is the time to remember the longest serving Member of Parliament for the contributions he would have made to the country.

The accolades being paid to Mr. manning by some of his political adversaries have been deemed as hypocritical by some.

However Mr. Jack begs to differ, saying being someone’s political adversary does not an enemy make.

He said the growing trend of having political enemies does not augur well for the country, or for the democratic process.
