UN expert says US attack on top Iranian General violated International Law

Deceased Iranian General Qasem Soleimani

A UN expert says the US attack that killed top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani violated International Law.

Mr. Soleimani died along with 9 other people in a drone strike near Baghdad Airport in Iraq in January.

A report by the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Killings, Agnes Callamard, says the US had not provided sufficient evidence of an imminent threat to life to justify the attack.

The US State Department accused her of “giving a pass to terrorists”.

Last week, Iran issued arrest warrants for US President Donald Trump and 35 others on charges of murder and terrorism in connection with the killing.

He was seen as the most powerful figure in Iran after its Supreme Leader.

He was in charge of the QUDS Force’s clandestine missions and its provision of guidance, funding, weapons, intelligence, and logistical support to allied governments and armed groups, including Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Mr. Trump described Soleimani as “the number-one terrorist anywhere in the world”.

He alleged that under the general’s leadership the QUDS Force had “targeted, injured, and murdered hundreds of American civilians and servicemen” over the past 20 years, and that the general had orchestrated a rocket attack in Iraq in December that killed an American contractor.

Assurance from the Health Minister that his government wants to bring every national back home

Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh

An assurance from the Minister of Health that his government wants to bring every national back home, but the process has to be carefully carried out.

Yesterday the Minister Terrence Deyalsingh was told of more nationals in several countries complaining about not being allowed to return.

They say many have applied for exemptions and they are yet to get any word from the Ministry of National Security.

Minister Deyalsingh insisted the Minister of National Security is working on the requests and there is no deliberate plan to keep people out.

His colleague Minister of Communications Donna Cox also assured her government is willing but there is need for some patience.

Many nationals have been stranded in foreign states after the government here took the decision in March to close the borders.

This weekend will see the arrival of another group of nationals, stranded in foreign parts since the COVID triggered closure of the country’s borders.

Yesterday the Chief Medical Officer Dr. Roshan Parasram said notice of the pending arrival came from the Ministry of National Security.

Dr. Parasram said when the nationals arrive they will be quarantined.

The number expected is being put at just over 100.

Earlier this week 290 nationals who were in quarantine for about 3 weeks were allowed to go home.

The 290 were crewmembers from The Enchantment of the Seas ship.

Twelve from the group tested positive for the Coronavirus.

Kamla Persad Bissessar suggest international observers for General Election

Political Leader of the United National Congress, Kamla Persad Bissessar

Kamla Persad Bissessar has written to the Prime Minister asking him to seek international observers for the August 10th General Election.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar wants observers from the CARICOM, Commonwealth and the United Nations.

The suggestion of the Opposition Leader has gotten support from at least 5 other political parties.

The Progressive Democratic Patriots, the Congress Of the People, the Progressive Party, the People Empowerment Party and the Movement for Social Justice agree there should be monitors here.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley says he has no problem with international observers being allowed in.

He says he will ask CARICOM and the Commonwealth if they are interested in monitoring the election.

Dr. Rowley says if the answer were yes he would let them know the observers have to be here by July 19th so they can be quarantined.

The Prime Minister is also reported as saying he has no hesitation in saying that at the end of the day he is certain the observers would conclude that the election was conducted free and fair and free from fear.

The Prime Minister is quoted in the Express Newspaper today as saying the Opposition Leader is laying the groundwork for explaining her defeat on August 10th.

“Settle negotiations or else…” a stern warning sent to the Keith Rowley government from Amalgamated Workers Union

Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago, Dr. Keith Rowley

More rumblings from within the labour movement.

The Amalgamated Workers Union sends a stern warning to the Keith Rowley government to settle negotiations or else.

President Michael Prentice says an election has been called but collective bargaining agreements are outstanding.

Speaking on i95.5fm yesterday, Mr. Prentice said the workers feel disrespected by those they elected into office.

Mr. Prentice said the working class has had enough of the unfair treatment.

The union leader warned that failure to present an offer will not be accepted.

But economist Dr. Roger Hosein feels job security is better than increased salaries at this time.

Dr. Hosein tells Newscenter 5 unions should exercise patience.

Further, Dr. Hosein pointed out yesterday that workers across the globe are facing the same issues and it would make no sense if demands are made and people are sent home.

On Tuesday several unions called on government to settle outstanding negotiations.

Associations representing police, fire and prison officers said members are 7 years behind.
