Newly sworn in Prime Minister tells his Cabinet no falling asleep on the job

Newly sworn in Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley tells his Cabinet and members of his government, they will not be allowed to fall asleep on the job.

Shortly after he took his Oath of Office, along with the new government, Dr. Rowley said yesterday it is a challenging period ahead.

The make up of the new government shows a mix of old and new, including the return of Faris Al Rawi as Attorney General.

Among those returning to the Cabinet, are Fitzgerald Hinds, Nyan Gadsby Dolly, Franklyn Khan, Clarence Rambarat, Colm Imbert, Terrance Deyalsingh and Stuart Young.

Dr. Rowley also explained the creation of the new Ministry of Youth Development and National Service, under Minister Fitzgerald Hinds.

He defended the reappointment of Colm Imbert as Minister of Finance.

Prime Minister Rowley also told of more youth opportunities in the Ministry of Sport and Community Development.

Calls to boycott SEA dismissed by NPSPA

Some calls to boycott SEA are dismissed by the National Primary Schools Principals Association.

The call came from Green Party political leader, Dr. Everold Hosein.

On Tuesday, Dr. Hosein specifically called on NPSPA to boycott SEA and spare the young children from what he described as the trauma of this abuse and enormous psychological damage.

However yesterday head of the association Lance Mottley told us to make such a move would have resulted in further mental trauma for the pupils.

Mr. Mottley said the call will not be discounted and in the future there is room for a national conversation on the way forward.

Mali’s President announces resignation on television

Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has announced his immediate resignation on state television.

The announcement last evening was made hours after mutinous soldiers, in a suspected coup, reportedly arrested him and the Prime Minister.

Yesterday’s events sparked international condemnation and are likely to further destabilise the West African nation.

The development followed months of anti-government mass protests and a rising insurgency from Islamist militants.

Wearing a blue surgical mask amid the coronavirus pandemic, the President said on national broadcaster ORTM that he had little choice but to stand down to avoid bloodshed, and the country’s national assembly and government would now be dissolved.

Grenada’s PM uses T&T as example in COVID address to his nation

Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell is warning his people to do everything possible to avoid contracting the coronavirus.

In an address to the nation yesterday, Dr. Mitchell used Trinidad and Tobago as an example of what could happen if protocols are not followed.

Dr. Mitchell is also concerned about what he is seeing in his own country.

Shooting incident in Maloney leaves 1 man dead and another wounded

One man is dead and another wounded following a shooting incident in Maloney Gardens.

Both are yet to be positively identified, but residents say one of them is known as Dubarry.

The incident occurred at around 11:30 last evening.

Residents say they heard the gunshots and called the police.

Near Building 2 police later found the 2 men bleeding from gunshot wounds.

Dubarry died at the scene and the other man was up to last night hospitalised.

Investigations are ongoing.

PNM says it will challenge election of MP for Princes Town

The Peoples National Movement says it will challenge the election of the United National Congress’ Member of Parliament for Princes Town.

Political leader Dr. Keith Rowley says Barry Padarath was illegitimately registered for the election, which is a serious situation that must be addressed.

Yesterday Dr. Rowley said he is considering the legal options.

Dr. Rowley said President Paula Mae Weekes would also be made abreast of the developments.

The Prime Minister elect noted that his party has won the majority and he is very pleased with the election results.

Opposition Leader concedes

Opposition Leader, Mrs. Kamla Persad Bissessar

Just over one week after her party’s defeat at the polls Kamla Persad Bissessar has conceded.

On the night of August 10th Kamla Persad Bissessar refused to concede after the victory of the Peoples National Movement.

Yesterday, in her concession speech, Mrs. Persad Bissessar said she has accepted the loss of her UNC.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar also noted the comments of some on social media and the offensive racist invectives.

She also said she will not be resigning as Political Leader of the UNC, because now is not the time for her to run away.

Many have been calling for her resignation.

Mrs. Persad Bissessar said she has a responsibility to develop the young people elected to serve the country under the UNC.

New government to be sworn in today

Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago, Dr. Keith Rowley

A new government will be in place by the end of the day.

Dr. Keith Rowley and members of his new government will take their oath of Office one week after the General Election.

At the end of contentious recounts in 5 constituencies Dr. Rowley told reporters yesterday he received word from the President of the Republic.

Five of the recounts were at the request of the United National Congress.

The numbers changed in some areas, but the outcome remains what was initially tallied, 22 seats for the Peoples National Movement and 19 for the UNC.

Not giving away too much Dr. Rowley said the new Cabinet would show his focus on agriculture.

He also said the presentation of a National Budget is being contemplated.

Sangre Grande District Court shut down for santisation

The Sangre Grande District Court has been shut down for sanitisation.

In a statement the Judiciary says vacating the building has become necessary as a precautionary measure given that a member of staff has been exposed to someone who has been tested for COVID-19 and is awaiting test results.

As such the Judiciary says operations at have been halted adjusted until further notice.

It says no one will be allowed into the court building until sanitisation has been completed.

The Judiciary says while the staff member has not been confirmed as COVID-19 positive, the usual precautions for this level of exposure has called for the current course of action.

It says the sanitisation of the facility will be conducted and there shall be no in-person hearings or activities.

The Judiciary says virtual court hearings will continue.

It says services such as Court Pay, the Domestic Violence Hotline and E-Filing are available.

One additional COVID case in Tobago

There is 1 additional case of COVID-19 in Tobago

In a statement this morning the Division of Health, Wellness and Family Development, said the case is pending epidemiological investigation.

It said all established protocols have since been implemented, inclusive of contact tracing, which is ongoing.

The division said there are currently 15 active COVID-19 cases in Tobago, while the total number of positive cases of COVID-19 recorded on the island is 22.
