Barbados tells industrialised nations, it is time to do better

Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley

Tough talk from Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley.

She tells the Climate Change Summit in Glasgow Scotland the people of Small Island developing States do not want a death sentence.

Addressing the first full day of the summit yesterday, Ms. Mottley lamented the failings of the developed and industrialised world.

She urged the international community to support a 1.5 degree Celsius mark regarding the environment.

Ms. Mottley warned that anything higher than that would constitute a “death sentence” for countries in the Caribbean.

She said promises made have not been kept and no one is being held accountable.

Prime Minister Mottley sounded warnings and made a call for help on behalf of several countries.

Nearing the end of her speech the Prime Minister said better has to be done to save the planet and the people within.

Prime Minister Mottley told the ceremony that because small States are increasingly vulnerable to the worst effects of climate change, increased global temperatures would impact these smaller, developing countries first.

Several people confirmed dead after shipwreck near coast of Port Au Prince

Several people have been confirmed dead following a shipwreck that occurred just off the coast of Grossay-Poh, South of Port Au Prince.

The accident occurred early last Saturday.

According to the Mayor of the town of Marigot, René Danneau, the ship was laden with cement, food products, fuel and a large number of passengers.

The Mayor told reporters that at least 20 people, including 6 women and 2 babies died.

He said the ship was “overloaded”.

Up to late yesterday the search was continuing for survivors.

A fuel shortage in the department prevented the rescuers from providing aid to the victims in a timely manner.

It also slowed the search process by the authorities.

Faced with this new tragedy Haiti’s Prime Minister Dr. Ariel Henri yesterday assured the families of the victims, as well as the survivors, of the full support of the government and the local authorities.

Full service at bars from today

The Bar Keepers and Operators Association says all systems have been put in place for the full resumption of service to the public today.

President Sateesh Moonesar responded to the government’s easing of restrictions on the sale of alcohol at bars and restaurants.

All businesses under the cover of safe zones will be allowed to sell alcohol to greater capacity patrons.

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh made the announcement at the COVID press briefing on Saturday.

Earlier this month the government launched the safe zones, which allowed the reopening of restaurants, bars, gyms, water parks, cinemas and casino’s at 50% capacity.

One hundred percent capacity service delivery is expected from tomorrow for fully vaccinated customers only.

While the bars are ready Mr. Moonesar has some concerns.

Mr. Moonesar is also hoping all bar owners will be guided by the public health policies.

Bars across the country were forced to close as the government sought to limit gatherings and stop the spread of the coronavirus.

$10 to travel from Arima to POS via Red Band Maxi

From today it will cost $10 to travel between Arima and Port of Spain via the Red-Band Maxi Taxis.

Maxi taxi operators along the east west corridor have been given new tariffs.

President of the Route Two Maxi Taxi Association, Linus Phillip said yesterday the increase is fair and reasonable, despite some criticisms.

Mr. Phillip also sought to address concerns that new fares could create another problem for operators.

He said such concerns are not new.

The fare increase was to become effective from October 11th, but Mr. Phillip said there were still some issues, which needed to be put in place.
