Teachers and students of the Fifth Company Baptist Primary School in Moruga are said to be concerned after a student died from a suspected case of Meningitis.
The girl died last Friday.
The scare at the school is believed to have contributed to a low turn out of students yesterday.
The Trinidad And Tobago Unified Teachers Association says just over 100 children attended school yesterday.
Reports are saying the girl’s father visited the school and informed officials that a relative had also recently died from Meningitis.
An autopsy was expected to be performed on the child’s body to determine the cause of death.
Public health officials were expected to visit the school but TTUTA’s President Lynsley Doodhai says, teachers and students are worried.
Meningitis is spread through the exchange of respiratory secretions during close contact.
Mr. Doodhai told Newscenter 5 yesterday, given the situation, sanitation must be done immediately.
However up to yesterday nothing was done.
Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
The swelling from Meningitis typically triggers symptoms such as headache, fever and a stiff neck.
Some cases of Meningitis improve without treatment, in a few weeks while other strains can be life-threatening and require emergency antibiotic treatment.
