Attorney General Faris Al Rawi is said to be considering the issue of free, unrestricted return entry of Trinidad and Tobago nationals who would have joined the Islamic state.
National Security Minister Edmund Dillon made the announcement yesterday while responding to questions from the opposition in the Senate.
Minister Dillon said discussions are now taking place with the Attorney General.
Opposition Senator Wayne Sturge had asked the Minister if government was revisiting or changing the free, unrestricted, unhindered entry of Trinidad and Tobago “Jihadists” now with Isis.
The Minister could not say how many T&T nationals are fighting the Isis cause in the Middle East.
Earlier this week the prime minister said Trinidad and Tobago is more vulnerable now than 25 years ago when the Jamaat Al Muslimeen sought to topple the then government.
And speaking on the morning show on i95.5fm yesterday, former Minister of National Security Gary Griffith said there is a need for the establishment of a special entity to focus on persons who would have joined Isis.
Mr. Griffith said it is a fact that some families have unknowingly been taken to the Middle East by loved ones who are fighting the Isis cause.
He said the Counter Trafficking Unit has been doing good work in extracting persons from such situations.
