Jamaica Labour Party wins General Election

Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness

The ruling Jamaica Labour Party gets another term in office.

The Andrew Holness led party won yesterday’s General Election by a resounding margin.

According to preliminary results the JLP won as many as 50 of the 63 seats in the Parliament.

Leader of the Peoples National Party Dr. Peter Phillips has already indicated that he would resign if defeated.

Dr. Phillips is reported to have already telephoned Prime Minister Andrew Holness offering his congratulations.

Last night hours after the preliminary results were released, Mr. Holness welcomed the victory, but with some caution.

He said too many people decided against voting.

Mr. Holness said the victory must not be used as a weapon.

The Prime Minister admitted that corruption and the perception dogged his last administration.

He said the party and government couldn’t hide away from that reality.

There are preliminary indications that the voter turnout yesterday was about 37%, down from the Election of 2016.

In the camp of the PNP, Campaign Chairman Phillip Paulwell, blamed the perceived disunity within for the defeat.

The Vice President of the PNP described the defeat as shocking, saying they must all take full responsibility.

Mr. Paulwell said the party must now do some reflection.
