A bedridden pensioner has perished in a fire at her home in Moruga.
The charred remains of Jean Mc Leod were found close to the front door of the Sixth Company Village home yesterday.
Mrs. Mc Leod celebrated her 73rd birthday last week.
Her 82-year-old husband, Hector Mc Leod, is currently warded at the San Fernando General Hospital, where he is being treated for second-degree burns to about 30 per cent of the body.
The elderly couple lived with their son, Melville who was at work at the time of the blaze on Wednesday afternoon.
Reports say Mr. Mc Leod tried to save his wife but was unable to.
Mr. Mc Leod received burns to his back, hands and face.
The family also lost their four-bedroom home, valued at over $200,000 and over $100,000 worth of equipment for their welding and mechanic company.
Mr. Mc Leod told investigators he jumped through the window from an eight-foot height and alerted neighbours who formed a bucket brigade.
However they could not put out the blaze.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
