The men fatally shot by police in a central robbery have been identified as Alex Keagan and Stephen George.

Police say four men attempted to rob First Rounds Liquor Mart, at Chin Chin road, Cunupia.

Reports say at around 4:25 pm yesterday, Samdaye Ali, her son Imran and Savitri Ramkissoon. were at the store, when the assailants entered and announced a hold up.

Two of the men were said to be armed. They reportedly dealt Mr Ali several blows about his body and robbed him of a quantity of jewelry, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The two women were also robbed of cellular phones and a quantity of jewelry.

A report was made to the police and a party of officers responded.

Reports say the officers entered the premises and called on the men to surrender. However, reports say they refused and began shooting at the police.

Officers returned fire and two of the thieves were wounded and later died at hospital.

The third man was held trying to escape and a fourth man, believed to be injured and armed, is still at large.
