Government plans to privatise the Port of Spain port not sitting well with SWWTU

President of SWWTU, Michael Annesette

The plans by the government to privatise the port of Port of Spain are not sitting well with the Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union.

The union represents workers on the port.

According to President of SWWTU, Michael Annesette, workers livelihoods will be jeopardised.

Finance Minister Colm Imbert announced the plan during his presentation of the 2020/2021 Budget.

He said the Port Authority will retain its regulatory and asset management functions but the managerial, operational and a private sector operator will maintain financial responsibility.

Mr. Annesette says government must include the union in any decisions going forward.

He wants the SWWTU to be a shareholder.

He also says the port of Port of Spain should be aligned to the port in Point Lisas.
