16-year-old appears in virtual court for murder of elderly woman

A 16-year-old boy has appeared virtually before the Children’s Court charged with the murder of a 71-year-old woman.

Reports say Kowsil Ramkhelawan was killed on 24th August 2020.

The teen was charged with the offence following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC yesterday.

Reports say Ms. Ramkhelawan, of Coalmine, Sangre Grande, was at her home when a male assailant stabbed her with an ice- pick, who then ran off.

She died at the scene.

The teenager was ordered to re-appear in court on September 29th.

Yesterday, TTUTA Vice President, Kyrla Robertson Thomas described the situation as disturbing.

She noted that the Education Ministry’s initiative would assist both troubled students and teachers working with them.

Meanwhile the International Women’s Resource Network is calling for greater supervision for the elderly.

Head of the group Sandrine Rattan said more must be done.

She also noted that when these senior citizens are left to care for teens, situations of rebellion may arise.

Ms. Rattan and the TTUTA executive were speaking with Newscenter 5 yesterday.
