Chaos at Piarco Airport as immigration workers stage sickout

downloadChaos at the Piarco International Airport, as immigration workers stage a sickout.

Yesterday the passengers from more than one flight waited for several hours to get the go ahead from immigration officers.

It is reported that only two immigration officers were on duty.

Arriving passengers told reporters from 2 pm yesterday the lines began backing up.

Eventually additional staff was called out and the situation began to ease as more immigration officers reported for duty after 7 pm.

President of the Public Services Association, Watson Duke calls it protest, but not sanctioned by him.

He believes it’s all because of the politics within the PSA influenced by the national politics.

Mr. Duke says for too long immigration officers have been complaining about issues at the work place.

On TV 6’s Morning Edition program today, he tells the government, it’s your fault.

Yesterday’s situation followed last week’s two days off, called by the PSA to workers of the Customs and Excise and Board of Inland Revenue divisions.
