The Education Minister describes as a ‘storm in a tea cup’ his now controversial naming of the new Chancellor of the University of the West Indies.
Last week at the Post Cabinet news conference, Minister Anthony Garcia disclosed that businessman, Robert Bermudez was selected as Chancellor.
But UWI issued a statement saying it was surprised by the Minister’s announcement since Chancellors are named in accordance with the university’s statute 4 which states, a Chancellor shall be appointed by the University Council ….
…. Adding that final approval would have been during the upcoming annual business meeting of the university council this week in Barbados.
This morning Minster Garcia insisted it was a cabinet decision to reveal the name.
Furthermore the minister said on the TV6 Morning Edition, that the heads of other Caribbean government’s have already approved Mr Bermudez.
