The President of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association says he is shocked at reports of suicide attempt by a 6 year-old boy. The incident is said to have occurred at the Carapichaima Anglican Primary School on tuesday.
According to reports the boy tied a sweater around his neck, attached it to burglar proofing in the school’s courtyard and jumped. He was soon found by another student who raised an alarm. TTUTA President Devanand Sinanan says he is shocked by the incident.
The Education Ministry is now involved but Mr. Sinanan is at a loss as to what would have triggered the situation. Upon questioning the boy, he is said to have told school authorities that he tried to commit suicide after a girl rejected him.
He said he confessed to his classmate that he liked her but she told him she did not feel the same. Mr. Sinanan wants immediate psychiatric intervention for the family of the chld and other students whom he says were left traumatised by the incident.
Secretary of the Psychiatrist Association of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Varma Deyalsingh is quoted as saying the parents of the child must seek immediate assistance for him from a Child Psychologist.
