Guyana Gets support from The Commonwealth over its Territorial battle with Venezuela

commonwealth-logoGuyana gets support from the Commonwealth in its territorial battle with Venezuela. The final communique out of the Commonwealth Summit in Malta says the heads have reaffirmed their support for the maintenance and safeguarding of Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Commonwealth heads noted that the Geneva agreement between the parties in 1966 provides a range of mechanisms for an expeditious solution to the controversy arising from Venezuela’s claims. The heads expressed their full support for the United Nations Secretary General to choose a means of settlement to bring the dispute to a definitive end.

President of Guyana David Granger says the process has moved closer to a finality this year than it has over the past several years. President Granger says Guyanese can look forward to an end to the dispute within the next three years or so.
