Citadel: A stronghold or fortified place; a bulwark
|
| |
The History:
The Citadel, a symbol
of the
"Tower of David" was built by Herod the Great as a royal palace for the western defense of Jerusalem. It was protected by three huge towers with the tower of Phasael
the only structure remaining today. This magnificent fortress was spared by
Titus in 70 A.D. and was used as a barracks for the Tenth Roman Legion. It also represented
the heroism and might of the Roman soldiers and the massive Herodian blocks that
built the Citadel are
still visible at its base.
The Citadel was restored by the Crusaders and the Mamelukes
in
the 12th and 14th century and most of the present structure dates
back to 1540 to
another great hero Suleiman the Magnificent. During the summer a
wonderful sound and light production ”A Stone in David’s Tower” is presented at the Citadel a monument of historical and archeological importance.
